What’s in a name?
Why we called it nerdle

And why not sumsle, mathle, numberle, etc

nerdle: February 2026

The obvious names
In late 2021, my daughter Imogen and I were driving home, chatting about the Wordle craze, when we agreed: there had to be an equivalent for math fans. Within minutes, we’d sketched out the rules — guess a hidden equation in six tries, with colour-coded clues after each guess.
But what to call it?
The obvious candidates wrote themselves: mathle, numberle, mathdle, numble. Stick “math” or “number” in front of “-le” and you’ve got a name that describes exactly what the game is. Clean, literal, job done.
But we wanted something more than a description. We wanted a name that captured a feeling.
Why nerdle?
We landed on nerdle because it says something about the player, not just the game. It’s a place where it’s fun to be a bit nerdy. Where solving an equation before your morning coffee is something to be proud of, not embarrassed about. Where “nerd” is a badge of honour.
It also just sounds right. Short, punchy, a little playful — and it rhymes with “hurdle”, which felt fitting for a daily puzzle challenge. (Some people do search for “nurdle”, “nerdel”, or “nirdle” — if that’s how you got here, welcome!)
Math Wordle, number Wordle… or just nerdle
People often describe nerdle as “math Wordle” or “number Wordle”, and we take that as a huge compliment. Wordle changed the way millions of people start their day, and we’re proud that nerdle has done the same for math lovers. But nerdle has grown into something much bigger than a single daily puzzle.
20+ games and counting
Since launching classic nerdle in January 2022, we’ve built an entire family of number puzzles and math games — the nerdleverse. Mini nerdle (6 characters), maxi nerdle (10 characters), bi nerdle (two puzzles at once), cross nerdle (a math crossword), speed nerdle, instant nerdle, quad nerdle, maffdoku, twords, and many more. Daily puzzles, multiplayer duels, crosswords, arcade games — there are now over 20 free games to choose from.
We haven’t ever looked back.
